WHAT: A benefit screening of the film “The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Greene”
WHERE: Cowpokes’ Marigny Theater, 1030 Marigny Street
WHEN: 8pm Friday, June 30th, 2006
PRICE: $12 – All proceeds to benefit Reel Identities LGBT Film Festival
CONTACT: Margaret Coble, Publicity Director, Reel Identities LGBT Film Festival – publicity@reelidentities.org

Capping off Gay Pride month, Cox Communications in partnership with here! Films and Reel Identities: New Orleans Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Film Festival will screen the new gay comedy, “The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Greene,” on Friday, June 30th at 8pm at the Marigny Theatre behind Cowpokes, 1030 Marigny Street. Tickets are $12, with all proceeds benefiting Reel Identities.

Based on the hit underground comic strip, "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green" centers on Ethan, a 26 year-old professional 'assistant' looking for love in all the wrong places – that is, until he meets and dates Kyle Underhill, a recently 'out' pro baseball player. Things progress wonderfully until Ethan's ex-boyfriend Leo threatens to sell the house that Ethan lives in, setting into motion a series of deceptions on Ethan's part to keep his house and his relationship with Kyle intact. By enlisting the help of a 19 year-old real estate assistant who has a romantic agenda of his own, Ethan discovers his web of secrets and lies will not be easily untangled. The result is a hilarious and endearing portrait of contemporary gay romance. Starring Daniel Letterle (“Camp”), David Monahan, Diego Serrano, Dean Shelton, Meredith Baxter (“Family Ties”), and Shanola Hampton.

This will be the only opportunity to see this film in theatrical release in the New Orleans market - following its nationwide release, the film will play on the here! television network. here! is available as subscription video on demand in New Orleans on Cox Digital Cable Channel 1 for $6.95 per month.

here!, America's first gay television network, was established in 2002 and is currently available to more than 50 million households nationwide. here! offers a wide variety of groundbreaking and acclaimed original movies and series plus the world's largest collection of gay and lesbian films appealing to the broad-based, diverse LGBT audience. here! is available across the U.S. via satellite and is offered by all major cable providers nationwide increasingly as a subscription video on-demand (SVOD) service. here! is also available to broadband homes via major Internet TV providers. here! Interactive Media, a new online division of here! Networks, has more than 2 million unique visitors a month through sites including Gaywired.com, GayMonkey.com, LesbiaNation.com and GaySports.com.

-----------------
Lesbians On Ecstasy (aka Lezzies On X) hail from Montreal, and make "electronic music of the lesbian variety." A quartet comprised of Bernie Bankrupt on keys/sampler, Veronique Mystique on bass, Jackie "The Jackhammer" on drums, and Fruity Frankie (aka Lynne T) on vocals, they're known for their humorous techno and electro-punk covers of lesbian classics -- i.e. kd lang, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge -- from their self-titled debut album. The band has opened for Le Tigre and Chicks On Speed, and has been remixed by Tracy & the Plastics, Katastrophe, Scream Club and more on their latest release, Giggles In The Dark. "Funnier than Peaches and more danceable than Le Tigre," says lesbian culture website Afterellen.com - LOE's self-proclaimed mission is to bring lesbian dance music into the 21st century. http://www.lezziesonx.com

From Olympia, Washington, Scream Club is Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable,"two freaky white rapper chicks" who describe their sounds as "electro sex hip pop punk rock rap." On their debut album Don't Bite Your Sister, the out-queer duo worked with Beth Ditto (The Gossip), Rachel Carns (King Cobra, The Need), Mirah and Tara Jane O'Neill, amongst many others in the Pacific Northwest underground scene, and have been busy developing a new underground label with Nicky Click and others, Crunks Not Dead. A fluke of luck has their "Debauchery Now" national tour with Nicky Click hooking up with LOE's tour date in New Orleans - we can't believe our good fortune to have them all on the same bill. Visit their myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/screamclub, or their website: http://www.screamclub.com.

Nicky Click is a queer femme solo electronic music and performance artist from Olympia, Washington whose debut album You're Already A Member will be released on Crunk's Not Dead in May 2006. She recently opened for UK grime-rap sensation Lady Sovereign, and performed at Seattle's "Queering Femininity" conference and Ladyfest last year. She's often compared to other underground electro-punk artists who merge their politics/activism with their art, like Le Tigre and Gravy Train, and has been called the queer Gwen Stefani (though we think she has more in common with Peaches). More info on her website, http://www.nickyclick.com.

So I was reading about this local singer-songwriter's webpage that characterized her music as "somewhere between the Dixie Chicks and Sarah McLachlan.” Uh huh. Tall order, I'd say.

But Blair Hansen is the real deal. She writes the lyrics (amazing) - the music (addictive pop/folk acoustic) - she plays the guitar (a natural who just finished her official 6th lesson) - and she's only 18. And did I mention that she kind of looks like Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks?

I listened to her songs on her website (www.blairhansen.com) - which I couldn't stop playing. Must buy CD. Must buy CD.

I went to see her play with her band at the Stork in Oakland a couple of weeks ago. Holy Cow! She is really that good. The kind of good that makes you stop in your tracks and say "This one's got it." A great live set balanced well with rock 'n roll, folk, and pop. It was like watching a young Melissa Etheridge before she broke big.

I bought a CD and it made the rounds with Delerium, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, and Le Tigre. I have to say that this CD leaves me wanting more. Lucky enough, the young prodigy is almost finished with her second album.

She's also the feature artist on Sonicbids: http://www.sonicbids.com/default.asp?spotlight_id=284

i'm reposting a note from my friend kiki, who is the director of Reel Identities - New Orleans LGBT film festival this year. the call for entries is open, and there's a BIG push for local/regional films... so i'm trying to help get the word out. the website is: www.reelidentities.org, and all the info for submitting is on there.

here's kiki's update:

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give an update on the Reel Identities LGBT film festival. We're very excited about some changes, in both the venue and the dates.

The next festival will be during pride month, June 10-12, 2005, at the Southern Repertory Theatre in Canal Place.

One aspect of the film festival is jurying works submitted to our competitive division. The first screening will be this Sunday, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m. We will be watching approximately 2 hours of submissions of various lengths. Please contact me for the location.

If you are interesting in being part of the jury but can't make it to this session, please let me know. Sometime in the next few months we will probably schedule a backup.

Our next planning meeting will be Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center, 2114 Decatur. Even though the festival is 6 months away, we have plenty of work to do now! We need volunteers for many aspects of the festival, particularly in getting the word out, soliciting sponsorships and membership, etc.

Even if you can't make it to the meeting or screening, feel free to get in touch with me if you'd like to add yourself to one of our three Yahoo groups: one for those actively working on planning, one for announcements about jury screenings and volunteer possibilities, and one for information about movies, plays and other presentations of interest to the community.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you, Kiki.

(email her at: coord@reelidentities.org)

THIS SATURDAY, May 29th at 7:30pm

SYNERGY: A Benefit for n.o.madic tribal dance company

n.o.madic tribal, New Orleans' only Tribal Bellydance troupe, is outgrowing its current space, and we’ve even located a new space that just might work, but the catch is that we have to buy mirrors, a sound system, and other goodies. The other catch is that we need your help.

Come support n.o.madic tribal at our show, Synergy, at the UNO Downtown Theatre on May 29th, 7:30pm. You’ll enjoy performances that feature the entire company of n.o.madic tribal dancers, including a reproduction of the choreographies we debuted at DramaRama 11. Tickets for the show are only $5, but we’ll welcome any donation you want to add to the basket. No donation is too large or too small; every bit helps.

To further entice you to attend, we’ll be holding a silent auction of local artwork and other goodies, donated by people who value and care about the future of n.o.madic tribal. The crowning jewel of the auction is an 11x14 Herman Leonard print (retail value of $950!). If you’re unfamiliar with his name, you may still know his work; check out his website: http://www.hermanleonard.com/.

Hope to see you there.

ps. if you've never seen bellydance before, come see this!

so... we'll try to reschedule the party or some other variant thereof for november or december somewhere else... and we'll let everyone know.
